JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Tiger Woods won the FedExCup twice during the first four years of it’s existence.
But he comes to the PGA Championship in need of a big finish just to make the field for the first of the four events in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.
Woods currently ranks 129th in the standings and only the top 125 after next week’s Wyndham Championship get to play in The Barclays. He trails Camilo Villegas, currently holding down the bubble spot with 320 points, by two..
Woods, though, said last week that he has family commitments and would not be able to play in Greensboro should it be necessary to ensure his Playoffs participation. So he needs to make his move this week at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
Based on last year’s totals, a finish of 14th or better would likely give him enough points to stay inside the top 125 when the final tally is made at the end of the Wyndham Championship.
Woods clearly wants to compete in the Playoffs, though. When asked about the names swirling around to replace Steve Williams on his bag during his Wednesday press conference at the PGA, Woods was quick to say he was focused on the season’s final major.
"After this event I’ll sit down and really look at it hopefully going to the Playoffs," said Woods, who is seeking his fifth PGA title and the 15th major of his career.
Woods knows if he can contend, the FedExCup and everything else will take care of itself.
“Just go out there and just play,” Woods said. “This is a major, and this is the fun part. We have four times a year in which we play for these things, and that’s all I’m concerned about. “
