JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — The last player to win the week before a major then go on to win a major? Tiger Woods.
In 2007, Woods won the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational before winning the PGA Championship the following week. Now Adam Scott — with Woods’ old caddie Steve Williams on his bag — has a chance to do the same.
Scott shot a 1-under 69 in difficult scoring conditions Thursday at Atlanta Athletic Club, where he was as low as 3 under before bogeys his final two holes of the day, Nos. 8 and 9.
“It’s obviously very demanding off the tee, but the speed of the greens is very tough to judge,” Scott said. “It’s not easy to get a ball to the hole and not have it run 5-6 feet by.”
As disappointed as Scott was with his finish, he was relatively pleased with his score.
The Aussie also knows that if there’s anywhere to score on the golf course, it’s early on the back nine.
“That’s where you can make a score,” Scott said. “Then you just got to hang on for dear life.”
