  • Niall

Im looking at these..Harrington, Rose, Els. Id also put Fowler and Dustin Johnson in there. Thomas Bjorn cannot be overlooked at big odds either. Throw Mickelson in there and i think the winner might come from this bunch.

  • Niall

i forgot about scotlands Paul Lawrie. Hes in my thinking aswell.

  • michael

Tom Watson goes in a time machine and finds his putting stroke and wins the open at 62yrs old okay maybe in my dreams.More logical Garcia wins the open after blaming god after the first round

  • ERIC

    IAN POULTER

  • Joe427Corbra

Tiger Woods with his 3 PGA tour wins and NO majors is BETTER than any other player out there with a PGA major under their belt.

  • mike O.

Zach moved me to the 92% with a great shot in the second play-off hole.

    This week.

Party like it’s 1995 – John Daly wins in a play-off against Dufner!

  • GNEZ

Ben Curtis is my pick to win. He could be to the Open what Andy North was to the US Open. GO BEN!

  • Jock-O-Lantern

For me the most shocking thing in these comments is the conspicuousness of Rory McIlroy’s absence in the discussions. Just 8 months ago he would have been everyone’s best bet. Now, he get’s mentioned just a couple of times out of politeness. If he plays badly this week then people are really going to dump him and perhaps Caroline too. Rumour has it, she has a soft spot for a dreadlocked German tennis player. The day Caroline realizes she can make much more money than all her worth by just writing a short book about Rory’s inside life (just like Tiger’s coach tried)she will have a choice. This week I think will be an American show. The top 8 players will all be American. I will leave you to guess who will be on top.

  • Larry Lay

Phil Mickelson – He came close last year, he had two great rounds at the Scottish, he wants it bad, and his name isn’t even mentioned in the power rankings, which should give him added incentive to hoist the jug and prove all the experts wrong.

  • skipbayliss

Tiger Woods with Jason Dufner finishing second.

  • . Donley

He is very accurate off the tee, and grew up playing in these type of conditions.

  • Jock-O-Lantern

    @.Donkey: who is this ‘He’?

  • Rex Donley

    Graeme McDowell
He hits the fairway and grew up playing this type of golf and the conditions.

  • Jock-O-Lantern

Sorry, I have dislexia, I meant DONLEY

  • skipper

    Euros-Graeme,Padraig,Louis O.,Rose

  • texwags

Jason Dufner although he hasn’t played golf for three weeks. He was due for a rest and he hits his irons better than anyone.

  • Cleveland

I fancy an American to win this one. No one has even mentioned a very talented young fellow named Brandt Snedeker. He has the short game to contend here if he can control his sometimes wayward driver. He is one of the best at getting up and down and if his putter is working, he just may pull off his first major.

  • Niall

im not seeing Harrington in here much apart from me and 1 other! 2 time british open winner. he is close to winning again no doubt if he can just get his short game going over the 4 days he can win a 3rd. over the last 2 months hes been hitting it time and time again to within 10 feet of the hole but just missing some vital putts. if hes close on sunday he can do it. ive backed him anyway for sure.

  • hoodwink

It’s going to the veteran winnerss this time, and to an American player who is a 14-time major winner. But the British Open has a way of sabotaging the favorites when the weather is bad and the potholes tha are many.

  • Kyle Koegle

Thomas Bjorn. Always plays well at the Open. Its his time to shine. Just no close up on his teeth please.

  • Al from Australia

Tiger Woods is obviously the best player in “The Open” this week. There is no disputing
this fact, however if he, as he claims, still
working on his game he will struggle at Royal
Lytham which has narrow fairways, small greens
and over 200 bunkers. Darren Clarke won “The
Open” in 2011 because he played “smart” links
golf.I wish Tiger all the very best and hope
that he performs very well. To be honest as to
who may win. I have no idea. I hope that it will be a memorable 2012 Open Championship.

    Padraig Harrington
    Francesco Molinari
    Miguel Angel Jimenez

  • sandbelt

this open might have a result something like carnoustie in 1999.

evidently the rough is up and very thick. if we get any real wind then a shock result is on the cards. luck with tee times might be a critical factor.

justin rose, to me, is the logical choice. he hits it straight enough, he can scramble and he is a good putter. probably at his peak. g-mac and fowler good hopes.

although his putting is very suspect, i expect a good showing from ernie. if it plays very tough, his putting might not be such a factor. if ernie has one more major in him, it’s this one. he knows plenty about open golf

because i think there might be an upset, i will be having small longshot investments on quite a few players. owen, glover, morrison, ramsay, baldwin and mulroy. all are between 250 and 600/1.

Tough, tough week to call. But that it standard for The Open. Anybody pick Louis Oosthizen last year? Not me.

I’ve changed my Yahoo! team four times so far, and I may change it again another four before plat starts in 33 hours. But here’s where I’m at right now:

A–Adam Scott, Kyle Stanley. I’m going with Stanley over such possible contenders as Sergio, Luke and MattK due to his stats in driving distance, fairway %-age, GIR and total scoring. On paper, he’s a perfect fit for St. Anne’s.

B–Westwood, Dustin, Tiger and Ernie. I’m still looking for a replacement for Tiger, as I only have 5 starts left for him this season. Possible replacements include Rory (not), Bubba, Rose and BVP.

C–Peter Hanson and Laird. I can’t believe nobody else has mentioned Hanson. What does he have to do, people?! Dufner is the obvious (to me) alternate.

Yes, I’ll be getting out of bed at 2am every morning to watch. How about you other Yanks?

  • hoak

    Westwood

  • Ashish

    Jeev Singh!

  • Andrea

I can not believe that Phil is being so overlooked this week.

64 / 65 in the Scottish (granted he had good weather) ended in a T16, and he was runner up last year at ST Georges.

People picking Zach make me laugh, hard enough to win back to back, let alone coming from a piss pot torney like the John Deere to the Open.

  • david

  • David G.

If Jack was in his prime who would we pick. He has always been a credit to the fans and the game. Never discrased the game or anyone for that matter. Why would we want that type of person to break his record.

  • Burgie B.

The Open is very, very hard to pick out a winner this week. My picks: Adam Scott, Steve Stricker, Bubba Watson, Lee Westwood, Ernie Els, Dustin Johnson, G.McDowell, and P.Harrington. This should be a battle for number one and a great WIN! Good Luck to all.

  • joe

I like Dennis pick = anyone but tiger, we dont need him anymore

  • Burgie B.

the article by helen ross brought tears to my eyes. she is slobbering all over tw just like the rest of the waffle house scribes how pathetic they get wishing that he wins every tourn so they can write abt him 24/7.
    SICK

  • CC

    Rory
Woods, Donald and Westwood will also contend.

  • David Finlay

Gotta go with Harrington, he loves bad weather!

  • Will

Rickie will convert this year and win

  • CUI Math Prof

    Francesco Molinari
Might be playing the best golf in the world at the moment…

  • smith

ESPN will have Tiger woods at 5: am although he starts at 4: am on Thursday. Considerably more mature and perhaps playing better than ever, although because of maturity apprehensive in some situations where he should not. It will be a thrill to watch him figure out these 18 holes throughout the four days. Heck even Will McAvoy in Newsroom will have to say something nice about tiger. Aaron?

  • peter t

rose could be his time . but anyone from the green island has a shot

  • Bill Shepard

TIGER will step up and get his 15th. major.

  • susan

I’d like TW to win. But Sergio is a sentimental favorite: it would erase the doubts in his own mind, and he may be inspired by Seve’s performance at Royal Lytham in ’88

  • Juurtuu Ng-Ngyuen

    I select the negro.

  • Howard

    Padraig Harrington.

  • Gabriel Millar

I’d like to see lee westwood pull one off, or padraig harrington. but I am slightly leaning toward Tiger because of his success in bad weather and his recent swing changes. but my pick is my man Dufner!!!!

  • Martha White

    Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson

  • Hank "D"

My picks for my Open Championship Pool. Winner based on most money from 12 picks.

    1. Bjorn

    5. Garcia
    6. Harrington

    10. Snedeker
    11. Westwood
    12. Woods

  • Johnstcy

    John Daly!

  • Mike 0.

Sendon? The anti-closer!! Laird 100-1 I like that action. Put me in for a dime.

For some reason i think Rose is ready for his first Major.
And like a few others, ive changed my team 3 times already.. Im going back to original picks.. (see the top)

  • Richard

I think Tiger has to be one of the favorites going in,and yes I would take him on the first pick. I also like Lee Westwoods chances as well as Justin Rose. The weather will definitely be a factor this weekend!!

  • Paul D

Here are a few names that would be awesome if any of them won: Tom Watson, Mark Calcavecchia, or maybe out of hybernation–David Duval for an encore performance or perhaps John Daly!!! Wouldn’t that be pretty cool!!!

  • Hank "D"

I’m substituting Rose for Snedeker. Could be more changes before submission time.

  • Miller

    Luke Donald

  • Rod Fuller

Ben Curtis. He’s not exactly a sleeper.
    He has been there before.
He has matured as has his game.

  • Sir Nick Faldo

With the significant weather factor it will definitely be someone from the U.K. I have four possible winners: Rose, Westwood, McDowell, Donald. I also think Sergio has a chance to break through.

  • Robert Lockwood Mills

    Ross Fisher

    Robert Rock

    Lee Westwood

    Jason Dufner

    Justin Rose

But I’m rooting for Ernie Els.

  • Richie

  • Andrew

    Robert Allenby

  • bruce watson

Have to agree with CUI.Molinari is playing his best golf. With two seconds in recent tournaments.

  • Scott Cross

Hasn’t played that well over there. But I like Zach’s carryover from a big personal win at the JDC think he will be around on Sunday. He’s having a great year!

  • Howard

Chopra? That was a joke, right? Watson will win a sixth (and probably a seventh) before Chopra wins.

  • MATTHEW

JOHN DALY WILL BE A TOP 5 IF NOT THE WINNER AS WILL DAVID DUVAL AND TIGER WOODS.

  • MATTHEW

MY SLEEPER PICK IS SERGIO GARCIA OR PETER LAWRIE

  • Bacardi Jim

The thing about Zach Johnson this week is that he looked exhausted at the end of the playoff Sunday. Then he hopped the charter and flew over to England. (Loooooong flight from Illinois!) Now he is in the single most physically grueling tourney of the year. (Except those years then the US Open ends in a tie after 72 holes.) He’s relatively young and in good shape, but I don’t think he has eaten enough Wheaties to be in contention on Sunday this week.

  • Bacardi Jim

    Sergio is hardly a “sleeper.”

  • Viddy

You can forget Westwood. The guy dominates mid tear events but continually comes up short in the Majors. Time and time again, he talks himself up only to fail miserably – the pressure is just to much. Serge is the man – its his time and nobody deserves it more than Serge. Sit back and enjoy the ride!!!

  • John Bootman

Tiger and Rory (my two favourite golfers) battle it out on Sunday
and Tiger squeeks out a victory! No. 15 and counting. Trust me on this one. Ratings will go through the roof!!!

  • Chandler McEwan

    Martin Laird.

  • DW

Wind blowing, rough up, he has a suspect temperament and I prefer odds of 50/1 or greater but Sergio with his game must have a great chance.

Others selected based on their supposed ability as good wind players :

Charles Howell – so disappointing but has a great temperament ( take note Sergio )
Gary Woodland – poor year so far but is a big price
Marc Leishman – has a better chance than the 400/1 available

    Others

Greg Owen – having a very good year, T23 here in 2001
Bob Estes – yes, yes, yes no chance but he has a fair record at the Open and could surprise early on
Robert Allenby – just given him the kiss of death as he does less than nothing whenever I select him

  • Spodod

Jason Dufner will perform on the big stage and win his first major. Even with four weeks off he is still second in the FEDEX Cup standings.

  • jomock

    Tiger by 5!!!!

  • jomock

Tiger in 1st by 5 and David Duval in second!! One can hope can’t they??

  • Opentheg8

    Chez Reavie

  • Buddy T.Cat

Morten Orum MADSEN. Total unknown qualifier from Denmark

  • makman

Kuch! Matt Kuchar just keeps making money but gets no respect. He is a winner.

  • Spodod

Jason Dufner will rise to the occasion and excel on the big stage. He has been consistently playing at a higher level than anyone and will win his first major.

  • Stefano

David Duval will conquer the course again!

  • yg2bkidding

I’d love to see Duval win, but I think this is the week Tiger breaks his major drought. So long as he keeps driver in the bag.

Oh, and by the way–The Tooth Fairy is my lord and savior.

  • fanny fanapple

Tiger Wins, and I am a big fan of walnuts, they’re my honest to gosh favorite nuts. Praise be to the walnut.

  • Cmoney1

I’m gonna go with Nick Watney. It’s his turn to win a major. He lead the field in green in regulation last week and if he can keep his drives straight this week he will be the 2012 Open Champion.

  • fanny fanapple

The only thing David Duval is going to “conquer” is the buffet table in the clubhouse. SOLO!

  • fanny fanapple

Double D seldom misses a cut, he’s usually right there whan the chef carves the pork roast! Whare is Duval’s looper? Did David get peckish during the practice round?

  • Elizabeth

Justin Rose and Ryo Ishikawa battle into a playoff. Ryo by two in the playoff.

  • Mike 0.

LUCUS!! And that will be the last we here of them!

  • Tommy

    Tiger Woods, Westwood and GMac
    Keegan to miss cut

  • danincv

TW The drought is about to end. People who write about “being inconsistent” about someone with 3 tour wins so far this year should wish they made that much in a year or a lifetime…

  • Steve

David Duval, former World #1, former British Open winner, playing well, likes the venue, change to slow green speeds will not be an issue for him, pressure will not be an issue for him.

  • John

Tiger Woods will win his fourth British Open…

  • fanny fanapple

Woods is in fact inconsistent this season, considering his statistical performance parameters,(best/worst) compared to HIMSELF, historically. He is putting the pieces together, we will see shortly, perhaps early next season, a narrowing of the margins, through heightened consistency as a result of Woods’ comfort level with his current changes.

  • hugh jarse

I don’t know why everyone’s going on about the weather. Thursday, Friday and Saturday all dry with very little wind. Sunday, dry and breezy. Plenty (for months) of rain to soften the fairways and greens and this will not be a typical Open (note no British in front).
With that in mind I think an American will win. I can’t believe nobody has mentioned Furyk (50/1), Kuchar or Stricker(both 66/1). Longer shots Curtis (100/1) Senden (150/1) Huh (300/1!!). All top quality ball strikers, proven winners and in form. Ok, Senden is an Aussie, but he’s hitting it so well at the moment, his dodgy short putting is less of a concern.

  • hugh jarse

Oh I forgot Dufner (50/1) as long as he’s not rusty.

  • Mark III

CUI Math Prof has it right. Francesco Molinari just had two 2nd place finishes this month. Maybe this week, he will win.

Anyway, I believe a European Golfer will be holding the “Jug” high come Sunday. Which one, I don’t know but so be it.

I hope Phil has a good shot at winning, especially after his good showing last week in Scotland.

  • Seff

I started commenting on who could win and this post got pretty long. Then I realised that there are so many form players and this event has many variables where luck and weather play such a large part. There are many people who can pull it off – JUST BRING IT ON – I LOVE IT.

  • Seff

Mark – Phil’s showing last week was not that good. I would not pick him on that.
Actually I do have a couple of favs – Zach, Dufner, TW, Rose, Rock, Senden, Scott, Badds, GMac, Westy, FMolinari, Strick, Oosty, Paddy, – oops – the list is growing.

  • Steve Van Leeuwen

    1.tiger
    2. Rose
    3. Rory
    4. McDowell
    5. Harrington

My top 5 for my work pool

    DJ,Westwood,dufner,Els,Garcia

  • aussie fan

From an aussie view John Senden is in good shape at the moment with Marc Leishman being born and bred on St Annes type links and loves the wind. Will have a quiet punt on both. Go boys.

  • richard cawe

this is a bit of a wild card but hes defo got a chance john daly bit hitting american can still do it when he wants to and at 225/1 is worth a small punt each way

  • RAMZ

Crazy to pick who’ll win when luck is a key factor in winning here .. golf world needs Tiger to win, so hope he’ll win !

  • Kjetil Larsen

    Tiger Woods

  • Paul Gray

Dufner has had a great year and is really consistent. Mickelson looked good at Scottish Open. Els is having a great year too and loves British Open.

  • Seff

Richard – at 225/1 Daly is worth a punt, especially if it does not blow too much.

  • Coady

Marc Leishman , grew up in windy Warnambool and has been playing well , its time for an Aussie to win a major , go Marc

  • SAEEM

I’m thinking Phil Mickelson should be prime for this. A very good 2nd last year should hold him in good stead for this. Besides Phil i’ve narrowed it down to 15 players that can win in my opinion.1.Aaron Baddeley because he is due to produce in a major.2.Colsaerts because his form is good. 3.Peter Hanson -this will suit. 4.Freddie Jacobson because its only a matter of time before he takes a big one. 5.Jacquelin because i’m not missing when he gets up next. 6.Martin Kaymer was good last week in Scotland. 7.Graeme McDowell could’ve won the US Open with some luck. 8.Oosthuizen because he’s got more majors in him. 9.John Senden drives straight and if putts well will be in it to the end. 10.Ross Fisher has regained his form of years ago and might surprise here. 11.Martin Laird again good last week and wiil be around the mark. 12.Cabrera-Bello because of his form being ok. 13.Ernie Els because i have a feeling something special might happen. 14.Bubba because i always have a few bucks on him. 15.Joost Luiten because he is the most talented played getting around in my opinion and has a big tournament in him for sure. That is all.

  • Tony from downunder

Said at the start of the US tour this season that Nick Watney would step up to the next level and win a major this year, it`s time.

McDowell,Poulter,Mahan and Westwood all with a great chance to lift the jug into the air.

  • Nick

I’m no Tiger apologist, and I condemn his personal behavior but there were hordes trashing Captain Fred Couples for picking Tiger for the President’s Cup. I predicted then that Tiger would win at least 3 times with maybe one major. This is Tiger’s best shot. If he wins, then he can say he is back.

  • JCM

Choi. Senden. Daly. Biershenk 300/1 for True South $ÂŁ$ÂŁ?.

  • Lorill35

    Tiger Woods

  • Pierre LeVert Desveaux

Tiger: playing the best golf of anyone in the field, claims his best tournament is The Open. Good combination.

Fowler: has the arsenal of different shots to compete at a course like Royal Lytham. Steady golfer who will play consistantly throughout the week

Westwood: His time to win a major, and he’d love to do it in England

Harrington: Padraig will be around the top, if he gets over the top is yet to be seen.

  • Stevie

Don’t read to much into what the weather is doing it’s not that bad the odd shower but the wind won’t be a factor it will depend on how you play the course and being patient.

  • Will

John Daly has been playing very good
Would be great for the game to see
big John to win the open. He has a
    great short game.

    Ten Picks for Open
    1. Dustin Johnson
    2. Fredrik Jacobsen
    3. Lee Westwood
    4. Nicolas Colsaerts
    5. Justin Rose
    6. Francesco Molinari
    7. Jason Dufner
    8. Tiger Woods
    9. Rory McIlroy
    10. Padraig Harrington.

Would love to see Rory play some great golf this week but my sneaky suspicion is that this could go to the big Belgian Colsaerts with Rose and Woods pushing him.

Keegan Bradley will RUN AWAY with the Claret Jug!!! Fortunately, he will be apprehended and the Jug will be given to the actual Winner.

good to see someone with an opinion, like jeff breeze at 6:20am.

these are my thoughts on his selections, just an opinion.

baddeley: disagree. badds cannot drive it straight enough, could miss cut.
    colsaerts: disagree. same as badds.
hanson: disagree. good player, but bit of a choker.
jacobson: agree. can get the ball in the hole. open chance for sure.
jacquelin: agree: good player on open style courses. underrated.
kaymer: agree. might be returning to his best.
mcdowell: agree. big chance. tough competitor.
oosthuizen: agree. talented. proven in the big ones.
senden: disagree. might finish high, but putter prevents win.
    fisher: unsure: he’s a maybe.
laird: disagree. unsuited at the open.
    cabrera-bello: unsure: same as fisher.
els: agree: top 10 finish almost a certainty! can win if course is very tough.
bubba: disagree: he’s a big double bogey candidate.
luiten: disagree: there’s a 75 in there somewhere.

    just an opinion.

  • Ryan

    Tiger Woods

  • RJM

No winners for me last week, and I always end up going a bit crazy at a major, so here are my picks:

Tiger Woods 9/1 – Can’t believe the odds on this guy have crept so high. He was as low as 6/1 after his AT&T win. The way I see it, he either wins or is nowhere close, so his MC at Greenbrier didn’t bother me. With his current win ratio and odds you’d make money backing Tiger every time out.

Adam Scott 45/1ew – Would have won his last tournament if he hadn’t slept through his alarm, arrived at the course 5 min before his tee time and played his opening holes in 5 over before finishing third. Playing much fewer tournaments this year so under the radar, but I have a good feeling.

Louis Ousthuizen 45/1ew – Never backed this guy before in any tournament, but can obviously win an Open, showing some reasonable links form and just seems the type of player who plays better in Majors.

Ben Curtis 100/1ew – Small bet, wanted to back him at US Open but wasn’t in the field, again, knows how to win an Open, and winner on tour this year.

John Senden 125/1ew – Could have won last week, and have probably his most consistently good year in a long time. His form alone justifies the price for a top 6.

Andres Romero 150/1ew – I liked this guy before seeing his British Open record, and he loves this tournament: has several top 10s and 20s, which is good for a golfer of his standard. Shown sparks of winning form in the US.

Sorry for the essay, just like sharing my thoughts.

  • PT

I see this every major. Everyone talking up the Brits/Europeans/Americans. Yet every year, a South African reaches in and snatches one. Take your pick of Louis, Charl, Ernie, Retief, Trevor… and those are just the ones who’ve already got a major. Then also try George Coetzee, Branden Grace, Richard Sterne and Jbe Kruger. Mark my words, any one of these golfers could easily do it. It’s going to be a facinating championship.

  • Mark H

I believe Stewart Cink will be contending on the weekend Watch and see.

  • John Vacek

    Wohnson Jagner
    Johnson Wagner

  • RJM

ps: forgot to add that I backed Harrington to win at 20/1 after the US Open also, so add him to my ever-growing list.

sandbelt: I considered Rose, but his poor Open record puts me off. I think he will win a major, but probably the Masters or USPGA.

I like your strategy of lots of small bets on outsiders, would have worked well the years that Curtis/Hamilton/Ousthuizen/Clarke won.

Did you decide to take Romero at 150 or leaving him on the board?

  • June

    Collin Motgomrie

  • Dudge, Ireland

    Jim Furyk, easy.

  • Ed Solomon

    My pick is David Duval.

  • jonathan

Its tiger time tnk we will c da tiger of old and to win comfortably on his way to regain his riteful position at the top of the world rankings……..

  • RJM

    Random bets i’m considering:

Ross Fisher 10/1 top englishman (I never rate Lee Westwood or Luke Donald in majors so this is a good way to back against them)

    And to miss the cut:
    Mickleson 9/4
    Bubba 7/4

Double (both to miss the cut) = 8/1

all tempting, but I’m worried got too much money riding.

  • tarv

    Sergio Garcia wins….

    Englishmen in mix….
Ian Poulter & Lee Westwood & Luke Donald & Justin Rose =finish top 5

But I will be cheering for Ernie Els

  • Darrin

    Jason Dufner
    Tiger Woods
    Zack Johnson
    Lee Westwood
    Matt Kucher
    Graeme McDowell
    Justin Rose

These are my Fantasy Golf Picks for this week!

  • Scott

People will remember the name Barry Lane after this open….trust me.

  • Rodaldo

Ernie Els …. significantly better form this year suggests this may be his best remaining chance to win another major … has been in the top 10 in The Open 12(!) times … finished T2nd and T3rd the last 2 times the Open was held on this course, so he, at least, should fancy his chances
Otherwise, most respect to Woods, Rose, Westwood, Dufner, Fowler, Harrington, D Johnson, Furyk

  • Dave Furlough

While the course seems shorter than others, which may even give some of the old timers a chance, I’m still going with the most talented European golfer, Rory McIlroy. He’s one that is going to win multiple majors in his career and he has proven that is time is now. I think this win would mean more to him than any others in his career to date. Lots to play for.

  • Allen Tawanda

Tiger Woods! They can go ahead and put his name on this claret jug! For once I wont have to stay up late to enjoy Tiger’s rounds as I am only 2 hours ahead of GMT! Cant wait!!!

  • Paul Morin

    My Dream top 5:
    #5 – Francesco Molinari
    #4 – John Daly
    #3 – Tom Watson
    #2 – David Duval
    #1 – PHIL MICKELSON
Meanwhile, Woods, Donald, MCilroy missed cut.

  • nap

    Francesco Molinari

  • Henry

I’m sticking with Tiger, healthy, golf swing appears to be coming around just in time for this event, knows links golf and enjoys it, and he has the right mind set. GO TIGER!!!!

  • xcaddie81

Going with an international feel.I like Jimenez always plays well in the majors & think he’s due for a breakout.Sleeper is Molinari

  • DOB

As well as tiger is hitting the ball right now, a links course should suit him well. he will have the opportunity to shape the ball both ways. don’t see the wind being a problem for him this week. if he can get his distance control down pack i think we can see him win by at least 4 strokes.

  • Douchy McGee

Woods will be filling the Claret Jug with some “ruphy” punch as an orgy breaks out at his post-victory party… everyone in the top 5 invited!!! McDowell, Fowler, Kaymer and Rose all into the scene!!!

  • Bizness32

    Got to go with Daly!

  • Ro Abruzzi

I’ve got a $20 pool bet on these 5 to come in the money: Tiger (playing almost as well as he ever did – finally!); G-Mac (on the comeback trail, it seems); Padraig (for the helluva it); Luke Donald (#1 for a reason); Keegan Bradley (sentimental fav because he practiced at my home course when he was at St. John’s; besides, he’s been playing well lately and maybe he can keep from shooting himself in the foot on the weekend)

  • bill

    1. Tiger wood
    2. Jason dufner

  • Derick Napier

    Oosthuizen, Lawrie,McDowell and Noren.

    From Sporting life

“Every links golf course seems to have its own micro climate and the weather forecast seems to change daily if not hourly.

On Thursday strong south-westerly winds of 15-20mph with gusts up to 25mph are expected in the morning but the wind should turn north-westerly and decrease to 5-10mph by the afternoon.

Dry and sunny weather with northwest winds 5-10mph with gusts to 15mph is forecast on Friday and Saturday. Strong southwest winds are forecast again for Sunday.

The prevailing southwest winds will blow from slightly behind and across from right to left on the holes going away from the clubhouse.

A late-early tee time may well prove to be an advantage.”

  • Davis

My number 1 pick is Westwood. Molinari is a sleeper. Watch out for Poulter.

  • Question Poser

For all the Tiger/Phil fans, who would you rather see win?

The weather forecast for Lytham on Thursday is bad in the morning and getting better as the day goes on. Some of the early starters may well have blown it by the end of the first round. Some of the late starters on Thursday include Mickelson, Furyk, Harrington, Fowler, McIlroy, Donald, Bradley and Curtis. The first two days could well prove favourable to this group.
The tip – RICKIE FOWLER. Us Brits like him !!!

  • Jacob L

Another new Major winner this week. Will be either Poulter, Donald, or Westwood. I think Westwood has to be the favorite of the three just because of his past performance in majors. But all have a great attitude going in. Woods top ten but not a win. Sleepers this week Robert Rock, Martin Laird, Simon Dyson

  • Ollie B

Jeev Milka Singh will make it 2 in a row…WATCH OUT!!!

Who do I think will win, could be anyone of these: Donald, Westwood, Dustin Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen, Mahan, Schwartzel, McIlroy, Adam Scott, Stricker, Fowler, Furyk.

Who do I WANT to win: 1. Daly 2. Duval 3. Tom Watson, but unfortunately none of them will probably make the cut.

These 3 will also miss the cut:
    1. Woods 2. Mickelson 3. Bubba Watson

Why? Underneath the high wispy hay in the rough which isn’t much of a problem lies 6 inches of thick U.S. Open rough. Their drivers will destroy all 3 of them.

    Just an opinion.

  • MJB

Jason Dufner has been playing some of the best golf on tour this season. He has the ability to consistently drive it in the fairway and is near the top in hitting greens in regulation. If he can make some putts this weekend, he’ll be in contention on Sunday.

  • Douchy McGee

Ghost of Old Tom Morris has slightly better odds of winning over David Duval…

  • Buck R.

Phil Mickleson short game saves the day and putter gets hot

  • Douchy McGee

  • Carlo Broglio

Phil Mickelson will win the Open.

  • Fish & Chip Systems

Phil hits every bunker on the course en route to an early exit…

  • vikes

Correct Fish & Chip Systems, including Woods and Bubba, plus the rough will eat them up.

  • Jimpala

I pick Westwood, Garcia, Harrington, or C.Campbell as my longshot.
Woods & Michelson will miss the cut.
    But what do I know?

  • Pauly Furly

Phil should finally win this one. He’s way under the radar, and, that’s when he’s at his finest. Go Thrill!

    @ Juurtuu-ng-/zgyuen: Hello.

Didn’t know they allowed posts from people with “chinks” in their armor.

I am old enough to have heard the phrase you used my entire childhood. Thought it was normal. It is not for use on a golf thread, especially, since it is supposed to be a gentleman’s game.

May all your dreams be nightmares.

Go Tiger, if not this week, by end of 2012 you will regain OWGR #1.

Sentimental fav: Steve Strix! All of us would be crying with him.

    Have a nice day!

  • Douchy McGee

Lance, I think John Daly will win too if the R&A decides to play The Open at 50% handicap!!!

  • CJW

    Mickelson wins by 4

  • vikes

Good catch dogcasey, I didn’t see that post, guy should be banned. Opinions are fine, but remarks like that are not.

  • Les

I wouldn’t take Tiger as my No.1 pick. Padraig Harrington is my pick, he is from Ireland, knows the conditions, has won Major’s, therefore can play under pressure and his game has come on at the right time. If the weather is good I would select Phil as my No.1 USA player. Other players to follow are Ernie Els and Charl Schwartzel.

  • Tom S.

Nicolas Colsaerts as a sleeper…ranks 8th in the race to Dubai…was 1 shot off the lead heading into the final found of the 2012 US Open (finished 27th)…beat mr clutch Graeme McDowell in the 2012 Volvo World Match Play Championship on the final hole.

  • Douchy McGee

Now hold on a second Dog and Vikes, Earl Woods could have raided Juurtuu’s village back in Vietnam… this could be a breaking story

  • Foxy

Padraig for me, he seems to be picking up the pace. Tiger obviously is a huge contender. The British press haven’t thrown out the welcome mat for Tiger so I hope he can shut them up by playing well, even out of the rough if he must.

Tiger will win by 7 shots

  • Levon Helm

Let’s see, Spain won the European Cup so a Spanaird will win the Open. While he says he is not good enough to win a major, and even though he is playing with Tiger the first two rounds, which could play with his head even more, it will be Sergio. And Italy was second in the Euro Cup, which means F. Molinari will be the runner-up. That’s my thinking, which for a dead man, seems logical.

  • Aussie dude

Bubba golf will be punished, no mercy if the wind blows, he needs calm conditions to go to work. Maybe Hunter Mahan could pull this off, on the other hand only a limited number of USA players feature in Europe if the weather looms nasty, the likes of Furyk, Woods and Mickelson can run a place. I gotta side with Paddy, Poulter, Els and a super smooth major sneak in the back door type of guy called The Goose.

  • john murdoch

Have a hunch that Justin Rose or Ian Poulter will be high up the leader board, but my main contenders are Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar with Martin Kaymer and Adam Scott close on their heels!
Not bad odds each way 1/6 places!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • The Tooth Fairy

Enjoy this major golf fans. This might be the last one in Earth’s storied history.

At last someone who agrees with me on USA TV golf coverage, well said JJ. BBC golf on TV is an art, no rubbish, producers and presenters that understand what the viewer wants to see.

  • mickey

I’m taking Trevor Immelman to win because he’s a Major winner in the past and has done pretty good at the Open. He’s on his way back again as far as being healthy and getting his swing back.
    He’s definitely a sleeper,that’s for sure.

  • Bacardi Tim

The GHOST of Old Tom Morris IN a playoff over Martin Kaymer

  • Dum Dum

Hey folks, Laird and Colsaerts are not sleeper picks. The are wide-awake picks and need a NyQuil because they both haven’t slept for a while.
My sleeper pick by the way is McIlroy.

  • Jerry Totin

    Everyone’s favorite, John Daly

  • Jerry Alkire

Tiger Woods will win the British Open. He is long over due to win a major and the links course tends to favor his style of play. He is a good scrambler out of the rough. In addition his stinger shots tend to travel accurately and long on the hard fairways. With the wind these low shots will exile him over the other golfers. Also , the normally tough weather conditions will eliminate a lot of the young , good golfers that lately have been shooting great scores in typically good US weather conditions.

  • Ping

    Tiger Woods

  • Bacardi Kim

Bacardi Tim, WOW! I love your name!
I agree with the GHOST of Old Tom Morris, however I belive Ernie Els will be in a playoff with him and will come out victorious. However, even with this victory “the Big Easy”, will suffer from Post Traumatic Stress (which he will never recover from by the way) from his encounter with the GHOST Of “Old Tom” and will be forever known as the “the Big Uneasy.”

  • Rick

Lee Westwood will win in a playoff.

  • Ron Heller

My picks are: Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald.

  • Al Hastings

If the weather is no rain or wind (Fowler or Mickelson) if windy or rain or both McDowell or Poulter. A real long shot George Coertez. a few years back he won twice on the Canadian tour and both times were link style courses and cold wet weather and it could be the same there this week, but a long shot.

  • Smart Alec

The GHOST OF ‘Old’ Tom Morris over the GHOST of his son ‘Young’ Tom Morris.
The playoff will last for 220 years, in which all of this generation and the next few generations will have to put up with.
‘Old’ Tom’s putt to win, will be the last struck golf shot of all time, (how fitting!) because everyone including the Morris’s will be utterly fed up with the game.

  • Padraic

Read the list of professional picks and think someone not mentioned will become the final winner. Think of the young lions and Young Mr. Fowler comes to mind. Never rule the young hungry lions out.

  • Francis Fikklefumm

    ‘St. John’ Daly

  • Wayne

John Daly will win the British Open and then proceed to raise h*ll with Austin Powers touring the UK in a motor home. Probably unrealistic, so let’s try Dustin Johnson.

  • Smalloran

Furyk, Colsaerts, Huh, Petterson. Me thinks…

  • Honda Steve

Tiger Woods!! The changes he’s made to his swing has set him up for this week! I saw him at the AT&T. If he hits it that well this week, he’ll win! Conditions are tough over there this week though. I think everyone is going to struggle.

    Good luck everyone… especially Tiger!!

  • Joeffrey

JoeF, I think the young lion cub you are so crazy about will be ravenously devoured by a famous veteran Tiger because in this drought, this veteran Tiger hasn’t had anything to eat in a while and will eat anything and anyone.
This event might even be replayed for a whole week on the ‘Animal Planet’ or some of the other popular nature networks because of the scenario which will unfold, which will indeed be a sight to behold!

  • Expat in Chicago

With the European Ryder Cup team all but decided I would look for an American who still needs points to automatically qualify — someone out of the top 8 such as Bradley, Kuchar, et al. Of course it would be nice if Westwood or Donald could get their first major but……..

  • Frano Annandale

    RORY MCILROY

I would win it if I didn’t have to stay home and do laundry this weekend. Darn it..

But, I’ll have to go with Tiger. If he stays away from his driver, he wins handily.

You HAVE to make Tiger a top pick. And he is certainly due for a major again. I also like McDowell – a great bad-weather, links course grinder. My sleeper pick would be Bubba. He’s creative enough to work his way around Lytham – if his brain holds up!

After 2005.2006 when it was easy to pick Tiger..
The Open has been a crap shoot….Watson at 59
almost won it mediocre Cink did win it….
Clarke how did that happen? So anything is possible the weather keeps flip flopping…..
So it could be Tiger might be Westwood Fowler might be a good sleeper pick however am playing it safe i guess with PADDY oh yeah Keegan will miss the cut!

  • Kevin

I am going with John Daly. He is getting back to his older game, except a little more laid back and it is starting to pay off. He has put some good scores up in some nasty weather at the Open before and as long as he remains cool with the unfortunate shots that every player will have, then he rise to the top again.

  • The Laughing Kangaroo

Mr. c., How do you suppose Jacobson to win if you yourself say he is in Sweden? The tournamint is in England.
You must really believe he is supremely talented to accomplish a feat such as that.
If he does, no doubt ESPN will have to have it’s top 10 plays of the week, all of Freddie.

  • Kevin

I am a little surprised that nobody has considered Ben Curtis. He is ranked in the top ten in putting, GIR, driving accuracy. That is a trifecta when you’re talking about an OPEN (US or British). A second choice would be Hunter Mahan, except his putting is not the strongest. My top 5 in order are:
    Ben
    Hunter
    Furyk
    Woods
    Zach Johnson

    Go Tiger

    ‘big’ ben curtis

  • Azhar Kirmani

If the weather remains as it is chances for players from the British Isles might be greater
than those from the US. Even so a surprise winner
from the US: John Daly, Jason Duffner or Web Simpson, or from the EU: Nicholas Colsaerts or Ross Fisher or an Oz : Allenby is quite possible.
As to the established top line, it all depends on
which Tiger, which Rory or which Luc shows up on
    the first or third day.

  • an ant in an apartment in amsterdam

  • Steve Raber

Graeme will win ! DJ second followed by Westwood,Rose and Els.

  • Ignacio del campo

I think that Andres Romero has good chances to win, he is a very creative player and was close to win a couple of years ago. Another candidate is Lee Westwood, he has to win his first major and he knows the field.

  • Peter

My Pick: A peck of pickled-peppers!

  • Damm Fool

    Phil Mickelsen!

Bacardi Jim has spoken and has spoken reasonably well.

  • billybob

I think Jeev Singh, Rory and Graeme will be the players at the end. Really like Dufner but not at this event. Do not make the cut, Keegan and many others.

  • The Voice of Reason

    Keegan Bradley needs to relax!
The Voice of Treason has spoken and has spoken very acutely.

  • Muzzadakiwi

well said biff, but I think strick might stuggle a bit off the tee, he wont get close enough to utilise his excelent wedge play

  • rossmorguy

I have been following Andres Romero for years, ever since his one and only win. He does not stand a chance this week–much too wild off the tee. If Tiger plays “aggressively,” as he says he intends, he doesn’t have much of a chance either. If Tiger sticks to the stinger and his irons off the tees, that’s another story. Players who seem to be suited and in good form are: Dufner (if he picks up where he left off), Westwood, Rose, Curtis (his form since The Players is a little questionable–I’m hoping he’s just been pointing to this), Oosty (though his current form is a total mystery to me), Scott (form?), Donald, Fischer, Laird, maybe Fowler too. I’d add C. Campbell and Senden, if either could putt at all. I love Stanley and Snedecker here, but they might both be a little too wild off the tee. Daly, Els, and Duval don’t have a chance, unfortunately, for different reasons. Just my opinions, of course. Good luck to all my fellow punters!

  • rossmorguy

Oh, I forgot Stricker and Kuchar, both of whom have games that suit. Stricker hit a wild drive at the Deere that took him out of contention. Not a good omen for the Open. And Kuchar, I just don’t know. I think he should contend. I better put a couple bucks on him right now!!!

  • Hank "D"

    Biff,

Now picking Stricker is a form of posting ” nonsense”

  • adrian

OK THIS IS WIDE OPEN, HOWEVER HEAVY RAIN AND WIND YOU CAN FORGET THE YANKS! THE IRISH LOVE THIS WEATHER SO TAKE RORY MCILROY, GMAC, AND LUKE DONALDS BALANCE AND SWING WILL HOLD UP WELL IN THE WIND, JUST HAS TO PUT A SOLID 1ST ROUND IN. SLEEPER: LAIRD

On this course, under challenging conditions, I would put my bets on Graeme McDowell or Rory McIlroy. Also, Louis Oosthuizen is a solid pick, based on his strong Masters showing this year and his Open win in 2010.

  • TinMan1939

    My “expert” pick: Lee Westwood
My “sleeper” pick – Tom Lehman

Bo is the ultimate player and has won but needs this victory to set his place in the field. I want to wish him the best on this event and for his game …. well deserved. No matter the outcome one of the main reasons that I continue to watch golf is due to his playing.

The Open is truly the “openest” of all the majors. Last year Clarke won us all over and the tourney. Could his buddy Westwood do the same this year? I would love to see it, but think a young one wins. A young yank to be exact. The team shapes up with a good mix of hot Yanks and stellar Euros.

It’s kind of funny that not one person responded to my post this week, but I have still inspired two imitators and a sadly deformed clone.

After a lot of waggling, I still stand behind Kyle Stanley. If he doesn’t do well, it will be forgotten. If he does well… ummmm…. most of you have the memory of mayflies and it still won’t matter.

i saw tiger played at st. andrew several years ago. with his stinger he never suffered from any pot bungers and finally he picked a claret jug that year.
my other notable player, except tiger will be this man
    tom watson
i felted sad for him that year in 2009 lost in playoff to Stewart cink at turnburry even he outrighted lead 1 shot before went to the 18 green but he could not save par that hole

  • ron brittingham

    matt kutcher

  • Midnight Man

I’m a Jim Furyk believer! Jim has the ability to pull this off. He’s determined … and the BO course is perfect for him to make a surprise attack. He’s overdue for another major. I’m pulling for him!

  • Narinder

Tiger is the guy, although I like Jeev Milkha Singh as a long shot.

  • rossmorguy

Something’s gone wrong with Furyk. I had a medium sized bet on him in the US Open at 40-1 and he spit the bit. He will not win another major, never, no way. He’s done. Maybe the Jonn Deere, but never an Open. Guts are gone and they never come back, just gets worse.

  • TigerLee

Obviously tiger is gonna be there. But I likefowler Westwood and Zach. Definitely not Keegan. He’s not good for the British. Rory won’t be there either.

  • rossmorguy

Final thought. Bo Van Pelt cannot win this tournament. When you bet on these guys you watch them closely and get to know their games and definitely you get to know their guts. BVP has all the talent in the world, especially since he’s gotten the putter working this year. He may contend for three rounds, and I hope he does, but I guarantee that if he’s close on Sunday, he’ll inexplicably start spraying the ball. It always happens. That’s why he’s only won once. I guess that he just ran into a bigger choker than himself that weekend, and that won’t happen at the Open.

  • pack

who is playing the best now, it sure seems like Tiger to me and that is why sportbooks have him the favorite.

  • Tariq Ahmed

    Vijay Singh

  • Brandon Evans

Tiger has more wins overall than anyone in the field and 3 wins this year, How can I bet against him? I think it will be a shoot out between Fowler, Woods and Westwood. Should be fun!

  • Kendall

Todd Hamilton gets 2nd Claret in thrilling fashion! Go Toddzilla! Go Hambone get it with that 2 iron bro and dont forget your hammy!!! Good luck Todd WE ARE WITH YOU!!

  • cbtrucking

My pick is TW. I think he is ready. If not I would like for Westwood.

  • Mickey

Would love to see Phil win. Maybe it is his time.

  • Sunil

    Hot picks:

Westwood- Sheer tenacity, knocking on the Majors’ door time after time..his time may have finally come…

Dufner : Should be ideal for his kind of game. His laid-back iron play and the touch of finesse could see himself right on top..

McDowell: Mindset for the majors…true grit could see him chasing the leaders..

Thomas Bjorn: May make up for not making good while Big Ben won.

Tiger : Will be there, stroke for stroke and proving that he is not done with the Majors.

Luke : Will look to tame the tiger and the other prospects.

Ross Fisher: True blues links-game prospect, shall show up at the top on Sunday

DJ : Long hitters like him can make up for some bad tee-offs, something that the abundant bunkers can always help the players with.

Sergio : Has his time come : may keep the Spanish flag on a high come the weekend

Webb Simpson : An all round game that could just see him in the mix on Sunday.

Vijay: Can’t rule him out…will be surprise if he finishes in the top 5…unless he has learnt from not getting too aggro starting the weekend.

Jeev M Singh : Coming off a great win in Scotland, will be high on confidence….Dark horse..might just creep him while the limelight is on the others..

Lefty : Very unpredictable these days. If he hits the top three on the opening day, lookout for a charge from him on Sunday…Out of the top 25 today, just as well rule him out…

Look out for a pre-dominantly European finish coming into the weekend….

    Winning post : Westwood..

Dark horse for a top 5 finish : Jeev Milkha Singh…
